SEF Canada’s primary objective is to help develop and nurture small- and medium-sized businesses in the region, diversifying the economy and providing a foundation for long-term economic stability and success. We aim to empower not only individual business owners but empower entire communities to take ownership and create change in their local economies.

SEF Canada has extensive experience working in some of the most unique communities, and we work to harness the power of close-knit communities to ensure that entrepreneurs can succeed and thrive. SEF Canada’s model is community-based and is designed to eliminate barriers of access that exist with more traditional entrepreneurship training and support programs. SEF Canada trains and positions trusted community leaders to reach and engage members of their communities in entrepreneurship training and development. Every business that SEF Canada helps start is truly a community effort, and the education and resources we provide last far longer than the project timeline.

SEF Canada’s overall goals are to support and increase economic sustainability and to improve quality of life in the communities. Our model hinges on training members of the communities we serve to teach and engage others.

Outcomes include:

  1. Economic development and diversification of the community, including the creation of new jobs in a more diverse array of businesses, increased community assets, and improved quality of life in the community.2

  2. A culture of entrepreneurship remains in the community, as community resource teams, facilitators, and program participants become skilled community leaders who can mentor future generations of entrepreneurs.

  3. Improved economic and social health of the community as members of under-represented groups (including women, older adults, youth, and indigenous community members) are empowered through entrepreneurship.

  4. Increased local services available in the community as residents tailor new businesses to the needs of their communities.

Small businesses are the lifeblood of a community, they add to the diversity and the flavour of the neighbourhood. Some businesses can’t survive a week without being open, let alone a month or longer, as some estimates are saying
